Exploring Hawk Rock

Hawk Rock

Hawk Rock

Our first official Pineapple Gang Hiking Group, hike happened this past weekend! It was a shorter Sunday hike than normal, but man the elevation was a work out! This week I was babysitting Tate, a Shepard, huskie/mix and he absolutely loved the two trails we checked out.

Hawk Rock overlook was our first stop. This is one of the best overlooks, which is also along the Appalachian Trail, located in Duncannon, PA. To get to the trailhead you will drive through town. A lot of visitors come to Duncannon for access to hike the AT. A popular place to stop and grab food is the Doyle Hotel which is a must do visit for through hikers. Hawk Rock is a short 1 mile hike, but is a rocky 700’ climb to the top. It definitely will get you a good workout in. Once you get to the top though… WOW. You have a gorgeous view of the Susquehanna River! Although short, this is a must do hike if you are in the area.

The plan was to head over to Table Rock afterwards, but there was an underpass that was closed due to flooding the night before soooo we shifted plans and headed over to Cove Mountain Preserve.

Cove Mountain Preserve also sits along the Susquehanna and offers some great views of the river and bridge. We were even able to see Lady Liberty through the trees. We had tackled two loops totaling a whopping 3 miles. The trails were well maintained and easy to follow. We even found a small frog pond filled with what must have been hundreds of bull frogs. Tate had a lot of fun swimming around and attempting to catch them. I think the best part though was watching him squirm at the tadpoles LOL.

All together we hiked 5 miles total, with about 1,200’ in elevation. Not to shabby of a day! If you are ever in the Harrisburg area I highly recommend visiting these two trails, you will not be disappointed in the views!
